Survivors Across Sussex: A 16 Mile Relay was a wonderful event we participated in, in June 2015.  Read the press release below by “The Cancer Support Community Delaware,” to learn more about this event!

June 18, 2015– Wow! The Cancer Support Community Delaware hosted an amazing event on June 13, 2015 to celebrate cancer survivors throughout Sussex County, Survivors Across Sussex.  Survivors Across Sussex consisted of two separate events. A 16-mile Relay that started at the Cancer Support Community Office and ended at 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown and a Cancer Survivors Rock! After-Party.

16 Mile Relay?!?! Yes, and we had walkers that walked one mile, some walked 4 miles, others set a goal to walk 8 miles, and did. But, 15 walkers did the entire 16 Mile walk, and rocked every mile! This year we had 8 Teams commit to being a part of this event, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tidewater Physical Therapy,16 Miles or Bust!, Dick Doney’s Do-Gooders, Beebe Homecare Happy Feet, Cindy C’s Walking Buddies, Miracle Walkers, and Walking Warriors. Those 8 teams knocked the fundraising and walking out of the park!  We were able to keep our walkers hydrated by providing water stations along the route. A special thanks to the businesses, Freeman Farms, Donut Connection, The State of Delaware, DelDot, Sussex County Association of Relators, and Forever Blooming Florist for allowing us to set up our water station in your Parking lots! The Reserves of Lewes Landing graciously approved us having a water station in their community pool parking lot, with the help of our Community Sponsors, Mark and Jody Ryan.  An extra special thank you to the Moose Lodge 646 of Lewes for coming together and donating water, fruit and your facilities for our walkers! The Sussex Tech High School Marching Band volunteered to play at the Moose Lodge 646 to pump up our walkers!  The Beachcomber Corvette Club volunteered their time and sleek sports cars to the Relay event as well! They were the walkers mode of transportation along the relay. When a walker had gone as far as they could, they called on the Corvette Club to come and pick them up! Talk about riding in style!

A special thank you goes to 16 Mile Brewery. They not only offered up their beautiful campus to host the Cancer Survivors Rock! After Party, they helped arrange the entertainment.  Mike Weyrach, KT Tuminello, and Black Dog Alley performed live at the fun-filled After-Party! 16 Mile Brewery also created a beer just for this event, Mana ‘Olana, which means Hope in Hawaiian! The Cancer Survivors Rock After-Party was truly a celebration! There was a cornhole tournament hosted by Delmarva Cornhole, food provided by Bethany Blues of Lewes, and the Brick Hotel, and vendors from Sussex County. During the After-Party we had an award ceremony.  Captain Holm from the Georgetown Police said a few words, and helped present the award for Best Dressed Team which went to Cindy C’s Walking Buddies.  He also presented the award for Most Team Members, an honor given to Tidewater Physical Therapy with 23 members.  Captain Holm and Dr. W. James Downs Jr. of Tidewater Physical Therapy helped present the award for Most Funds Raised, which was presented to Rich Morgante and Ed McHale’s team Ladies and Gentlemen!

We would like to thank our generous sponsors, Tidewater Physical Therapy, Sun Pile Foundations, Tony Sasso and Pauline Zagrillo. Thank you to our community partners, 16 Mile Brewery, Delmarva Cornhole, Lewes Fire Department, Georgetown Police Department, Moose Lodge 646, Beachcombers Corvette Club, Village Salon and Spa, Dynamic Physical Therapy and No Limits Marketing.
