What is LSVT BIG® is derived from the LSVT LOUD® program whereas patients with speech disorders associated with Parkinson disease use increasing vocal volume to help treat the disorders. Sixteen, one-hour sessions spread over four weeks with a speech therapist, is the standard time for this program. The principals of LSVT LOUD® are applied to LSVT BIG®, albiet using the motion of the body versus the voice. In this treatment, a physical therapist trains the patient in increased amplitude of limb and body movement, known as Bigness. This treatment in people with Parkinson disease has documented improvements in amplitude (trunk rotation/gait) that generalized to improved speed (upper/lower limbs), balance, and quality of life. The protocol is both intensive and complex, with many repetitions of core movements that are used in daily living. This type of practice is necessary to optimize learning and carryover of your better movement into everyday life.
